Brasilia is the capital city of the Federative Republic of Brazil and the seat of the Federal District government. In the census conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics in 2010, its population is 2,562,963 inhabitants, and then the fourth most populous city in Brazil.
Brazil also has the second highest per capita gross domestic product of Brazil (40 696.00 dollars) between the capital cities, surpassed only by Victoria (60 592.00 reais). Along with Annapolis (139 km) and Goiânia (209 km) makes the axis Brasilia-Goiania, Anapolis the most developed region of Central Brazil.
Inaugurated on April 21, 1960, by President Kubitschek de Oliveira, Brasília is the third capital of Brazil, after Rio de Janeiro and Salvador. The transfer of the principal organs of the federal administration to the new capital was progressive, with the change of the headquarters of the Executive, Legislative and federal courts.
The urban plan of the capital, known as "Pilot Plan" was prepared by urban planner Lucio Costa, who, taking advantage of the topography of the region, has adapted the design of Lake Paranoá, designed in 1893 by Mission Cruls. The lake stores 600 million cubic meters of water. Many of the buildings of the Capital City were designed by renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer.
